Dear Carl,

Lately, I've been feeling lost—I can’t concentrate or stay focused. Things that used to feel manageable now feel impossible. I’m exhausted, overwhelmed, and unmotivated. I’ve had to cut out the amount of sleep I get just to keep up with everything and though I'm really trying hard, it's getting tougher by the day. Please help me help me get my mental and emotional energy back up.

Thank you,
A concerned caregiver

Dear Concerned,

With everything that comes with intentional caregiving, it’s easy to forget about your own needs—especially rest. Feeling extra worn out by the demands that come with this job is totally normal. Juggling your loved one’s care with everything else you have going on in your life is bound to mess with your normal routine, your sleep schedule, as well as your emotional and physical heath.  All of this adds up to you feeling stressed.

I’d like to gently remind you that your well-being is directly tied to the quality of the care you give your loved one. Rest isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. You need and deserve care, attention, and downtime just as much as those you care for. When you prioritize your own rest, it not only benefits you but, also helps you show up with the patience, understanding, and compassion that this role asks of you.

Here are a few practical tips to help you regain your mental and emotional energy:

1. Prioritize Sleep: Try to establish a consistent bedtime routine. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

2. Seek respite Care: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family members, friends, or professional support care services to give yourself a break. Caring for your loved one doesn’t solely have to fall on you.

3. Practice Relaxation Techniques: To reduce stress, consider techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga.

Consider this a gentle nudge from one friend to another to take time to reflect on your sleep habits and make them a priority. It’s an integral step that honors not only your own health but also your valuable role in this journey. Remember, we at Carl are here cheering you on in spirit and will support you every step of the way. 💤

Rooting for you always,
Alicia and the Carl team
